French Sorrel (Rumex scutatus)
1 established plant sent in plastic-free packaging, producing tender, lemony leaves that bring a bright, tangy flavour to spring and summer dishes. 9cm pot.
Perennial | 20–40cm tall | Full sun to partial shade | Edible leaves, soups, sauces | Cut-and-come-again, early harvest
French Sorrel is a low-growing, clump-forming herb with soft, shield-shaped grey-green leaves and a refreshing citrus aroma. It’s one of the first greens to emerge in spring, producing a steady crop of leaves right through to late summer. Its compact size and gentle spreading habit make it a great fit for herb beds, raised beds, or pots.
The flavour is sharply lemony with a hint of spinach, perfect for adding brightness to soups, sauces, omelettes, or salads. It’s a classic ingredient in French cuisine, particularly in cream-based sauces and purées. Leaves are best harvested young and tender, and the plant will keep producing if picked regularly.
French Sorrel is easy to grow, hardy, and low-maintenance. It tolerates poor soils and can be divided every few years to refresh the plant and expand your crop. Vigorous, long-lived, and full of zing, it’s a must-have perennial for any kitchen garden.
