Perennial | Height 30–60cm | Full sun to partial shade | Edible leaves, soups, sauces | Cut-and-come-again, early harvest

‘Belleville’ Sorrel is a vigorous, upright perennial leaf crop with large, smooth green leaves and a fresh citrus tang. One of the earliest greens to emerge in spring, it produces abundant harvests from early spring through to autumn. Its larger size and productive nature make it ideal for vegetable beds, perennial borders, or dedicated kitchen garden spaces.

The flavour is bold, sharp, and lemony with deeper sorrel intensity than French sorrel, making it excellent for soups, sauces, omelettes, and traditional sorrel dishes. The broad leaves can be harvested young for salads or left to mature for cooking. Regular picking encourages continuous fresh growth throughout the season.

Belleville Sorrel is exceptionally hardy, easy to grow, and reliable year after year. It thrives in most soils, copes well with cooler conditions, and benefits from occasional division to maintain vigour. Productive, resilient, and packed with flavour, it’s a superb perennial green for gardeners wanting dependable early harvests.

FAQs

We hope our FAQ’s help, but if you need any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

We can only send orders to other parts of mainland GB due to strict regulations for the sending of plant materials and sadly we do not have the capacity to fill in phytosanitary certificates.

As we are a small business we currently have one packing day a week, and so expect your delivery within 2 weeks from ordering your plants.

At this moment in time we are not open for visits to the nursery, however if you come on a volunteer day or in-person course with Huw or Sam at Dan Yr Onnen you can of course then see the nursery and purchase plants in person.

Because working with plants can be an unpredictable business, for simplicity we do not offer pre-orders on all products however we may occasuinally open certain orders for pre orders and these will be clearly marked. The best time to know that we have restocked is to join our mailing list followed by looking out for updates on our Instagram.

We have decided to focus on growing plants 100% naturally without the limitations of going with organic certification. No artificial pesticides, fungicides, or anyother-icides are used on site.
