Chinese Garlic Chive (Allium tuberosum)

1 healthy plant sent in plastic-free packaging, producing flat, garlic-scented leaves that are a staple in Asian cooking and return reliably each year. 9cm pot.

Perennial | 30–50cm tall | Full sun to partial shade | Edible leaves and flowers | Mild garlic flavour, cut-and-come-again

Chinese Garlic Chive is a clump-forming perennial with flat, strap-like green leaves and clusters of star-shaped white flowers in late summer. The leaves emerge in early spring and stay productive through autumn, providing a consistent, low-maintenance harvest from a compact and tidy plant. It blends easily into borders, herb beds, or container gardens and makes a graceful ornamental as well as a reliable food crop.

The flavour is a mellow mix of chive and garlic, ideal for dumplings, stir-fries, soups, and egg dishes. Leaves can be cut regularly without affecting regrowth and are best harvested when young and tender. The flowers are also edible, adding a mild garlic kick and visual appeal to salads and garnishes.

It is hardy, drought-tolerant once established, and attracts pollinators when in bloom. Left to flower, it gently self-seeds, helping to form a long-lasting patch with very little input. Versatile, resilient, and richly flavoured, Chinese Garlic Chive is a garden essential for year-round cooking.

FAQs

We hope our FAQ’s help, but if you need any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

We can only send orders to other parts of mainland GB due to strict regulations for the sending of plant materials and sadly we do not have the capacity to fill in phytosanitary certificates.

As we are a small business we currently have one packing day a week, and so expect your delivery within 2 weeks from ordering your plants.

At this moment in time we are not open for visits to the nursery, however if you come on a volunteer day or in-person course with Huw or Sam at Dan Yr Onnen you can of course then see the nursery and purchase plants in person.

Because working with plants can be an unpredictable business, for simplicity we do not offer pre-orders however we may be able to offer a special offer so do get in touch. The best time to know that we have restocked is to join our mailing list followed by looking out for updates on our Instagram.

We have decided to focus on growing plants 100% naturally without the limitations of going with organic certification. No artificial pesticides, fungicides, or anyother-icides are used on site.

Yes – we allow bank transfers! Please select the ‘bank transfer’ option when ordering, and then we will send you the relevant details for payment. Please note we will not be able to send out plants until the bank transfer has been processed.
