Lovage (Levisticum officinale)

1 established plant sent in plastic-free packaging, with tall, celery-scented stems and leaves that bring bold flavour and height to herb gardens and borders. 9cm pot.

Perennial | 150–200cm tall | Full sun to partial shade | Edible leaves, stems, seeds, roots | Hardy, vigorous, celery alternative

Lovage is a tall, upright herb with deeply cut, glossy green leaves and hollow stems that resemble oversized parsley or celery. It emerges early in spring and quickly forms a statuesque clump that can reach head height by midsummer, topped with umbels of yellow-green flowers that attract beneficial insects.

The leaves have a strong, savoury flavour similar to celery with a hint of anise, perfect for flavouring stocks, soups, stews, and savoury baked goods. The young stems can be blanched and used like celery, the seeds harvested for spice blends, and the roots cooked or used medicinally. A little goes a long way, and regular harvesting keeps the plant leafy and productive.

Lovage thrives with very little attention and returns reliably each year, even in cooler, exposed gardens. Its deep roots help break up soil and draw up nutrients, and its tall stature makes it a useful living screen or background plant. Towering, tasty, and wonderfully generous, lovage is a must-have for any serious herb grower.

FAQs

We hope our FAQ’s help, but if you need any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

We can only send orders to other parts of mainland GB due to strict regulations for the sending of plant materials and sadly we do not have the capacity to fill in phytosanitary certificates.

As we are a small business we currently have one packing day a week, and so expect your delivery within 2 weeks from ordering your plants.

At this moment in time we are not open for visits to the nursery, however if you come on a volunteer day or in-person course with Huw or Sam at Dan Yr Onnen you can of course then see the nursery and purchase plants in person.

Because working with plants can be an unpredictable business, for simplicity we do not offer pre-orders however we may be able to offer a special offer so do get in touch. The best time to know that we have restocked is to join our mailing list followed by looking out for updates on our Instagram.

We have decided to focus on growing plants 100% naturally without the limitations of going with organic certification. No artificial pesticides, fungicides, or anyother-icides are used on site.

Yes – we allow bank transfers! Please select the ‘bank transfer’ option when ordering, and then we will send you the relevant details for payment. Please note we will not be able to send out plants until the bank transfer has been processed.
