Allium fistulosum is a robust, non-bulbing perennial native to Asia that provides a permanent, reliable alternative to sowing annual spring onions. It focuses its energy on producing a dense, multiplying clump of hollow, cylindrical leaves rather than a large underground bulb. In the kitchen, it offers a crisp texture and a mild onion flavour. It is highly versatile, perfect for snipping fresh into salads, garnishing stir-fries, or harvesting continuously as a cut-and-come-again crop.

In mid-summer, the plant produces tall stalks topped with spherical, greenish-white umbels. These densely packed flower heads provide an easily accessible and rich source of nectar and pollen. Studies on companion planting demonstrate that the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by alliums effectively disrupt the host-seeking olfactory senses of herbivorous pests. Planting these aromatic clumps around vegetable beds can help to mask your crop against pests such as the carrot root fly.

This is an exceptionally low-maintenance and resilient crop. Holding an RHS H6 hardiness rating, it will comfortably survive severe UK winters down to -20°C without issue. It thrives in well-drained soil and tolerates both full sun and partial shade. Rather than dying back completely, it often remains evergreen through milder winters, providing fresh harvests when other garden crops are dormant. Over time, the root system multiplies to form a dense cluster; lifting and dividing this clump every three to four years will maintain the plant’s vigour and effortlessly yield new stock.
