Thai Mint
£4.50
Thai Mint (Mentha arvensis var. piperascens / Mentha x cordifolia)
We like to grow Thai Mint to capture the authentic, sharp, and slightly spicy menthol punch required for proper Southeast Asian cooking, a complex flavour profile that standard supermarket spearmint simply cannot replicate. Harvesting is a simple “cut-and-come-again” process: snip off the top few inches of the leafy stems throughout the growing season. The fresh leaves should be torn or chopped immediately before use to release their volatile oils. It is the definitive mint used in traditional Southeast Asian salads, fresh spring rolls, and fiery curries. When grown in a rich, moist environment, Thai Mint is an incredibly prolific producer. A single, contained patch or large pot will easily yield 3 to 4 generous handfuls of fresh leaves every single week from late spring right through to the first frosts of autumn.
Perennial | 40/60cm tall | Partial shade to full sun | Edible aromatic foliage | Premium culinary herb and vigorous groundcover

Like almost all Mentha species, Thai Mint demands consistently moist, rich soil to thrive. It performs well in partial, dappled shade, which prevents the leaves from scorching, though it will tolerate full sun provided the soil never dries out completely. It is highly adaptable to heavy clay soils that retain water this plant is completely frost-hardy across the UK, easily surviving down to -20°C. However, like all mints Its vigorous underground runners (rhizomes) will rapidly colonize and dominate any open soil. We suggest planting it in a large, bottomless pot sunk into the ground, or cultivating it entirely in standalone containers. To maintain a flush of tender new leaves, cut the plant back hard just as it begins to flower in mid-summer.
In late summer, if left unpruned, it produces dense, terminal spikes of tiny, pale lilac/pink flowers. These late-season mint flowers are an absolute magnet for foraging honeybees, tiny solitary bees, and critical aphid-predatory hoverflies looking to build winter reserves.
