Stridolo (Silene vulgaris)

Stridolo is the cultivated cousin of the wild Bladder Campion (Silene vulgaris). Its a short lived perennial vegetable that self-seeds readily. While it shares the same hardy, resilient nature as its wild relative, this specific culinary strain has been carefully selected over generations for the kitchen garden. It forms low, mounding clumps of slender, blue-green foliage that shoots up a cloud of charming, balloon-like pinkish white edible flowers in midsummer. Unlike the wild variety, which can become tough, this cultivated selection stays tender and sweet for much longer, offering a unique flavour profile reminiscent of young garden pea shoots and a leafy green such as spinach and a light, crunchy, fresh texture.

Perennial | 30/60cm tall | Full sun to partial shade | Tasty edible Stems, leaves, and flowers | Resilient and loved by pollinators.

tridolo is the cultivated cousin of the wild Bladder Campion (Silene vulgaris). It’s a short-lived perennial vegetable that self-seeds readily. Unlike the wild variety, which can become tough, bitter or have a slightly waxy coating to protect itself from the harsh environment it is found in, this cultivated selection stays tender and sweet for much longer, offering a unique flavour profile reminiscent of young garden pea shoots and a leafy green such as spinach and a light, crunchy, fresh texture.

Even if you didn’t eat this plant its would make a beautiful addition to your garden. The flowers are rich in nectar, making them a magnet for pollinators, and it’s ability to grow in all conditions makes it suitable for most gardens. Although its a short-lived perennial, it self-seeds well, and once planted, you can have it in your garden year after year. If not wanted, the small seedlings are easily weeded out.

Love for the plants and passion for growing shines in abundance from the plants I have received. Delivered well packed and in great condition. Now I just need to read up on how to plant these properly in Huw’s book to do them justice and hopefully I’ll have little permaculture garden of my own for years to come. Great job Huw & everyone at Dyfi for inspiration and excellent YouTube chanel too

FAQs

We hope our FAQ’s help, but if you need any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

We can only send orders to other parts of mainland GB due to strict regulations for the sending of plant materials and sadly we do not have the capacity to fill in phytosanitary certificates.

As we are a small business we currently have one packing day a week, and so expect your delivery within 2 weeks from ordering your plants.

At this moment in time we are not open for visits to the nursery, however if you come on a volunteer day or in-person course with Huw or Sam at Dan Yr Onnen you can of course then see the nursery and purchase plants in person.

Because working with plants can be an unpredictable business, for simplicity we do not offer pre-orders on all products however we may occasuinally open certain orders for pre orders and these will be clearly marked. The best time to know that we have restocked is to join our mailing list followed by looking out for updates on our Instagram.

We have decided to focus on growing plants 100% naturally without the limitations of going with organic certification. No artificial pesticides, fungicides, or anyother-icides are used on site.
