Pink Dandelion (Taraxacum pseudoroseum) (pink and yellow bi-coloured blooms)
£4.75
Pink Dandelion (Taraxacum pseudoroseum)
Taraxacum pseudoroseum is a rare botanical curiosity originating from the mountainous regions of Central Asia. While closely related to the common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), it is a distinct, well-behaved species that forms a neat, clump-forming basal rosette without the aggressively invasive tendencies of its European cousin. It produces striking, bicoloured flowers from April onwards, featuring pale pink outer petals surrounding a golden-yellow centre. It is entirely edible and shares the same nutritional profile as the common dandelion. The young, deeply toothed leaves contain sesquiterpene lactones, giving them a sharp, bitter flavour . The distinctive pink flowers make a beautiful, sweet-tasting garnish, while the deep taproot is rich in the prebiotic fibre inulin. Like common dandelion its exceptionally resilient and low-maintenance. It is fully hardy across the UK and will comfortably survive extreme winter freezing. It thrives in almost any soil type, from heavy clay to poor, rocky ground, and is highly drought-tolerant once established.

In the kitchen, it is entirely edible and shares the same nutritional profile as the common dandelion. The young, deeply toothed leaves contain sesquiterpene lactones, giving them a sharp, bitter flavour. The distinctive pink flowers make a beautiful, sweet-tasting garnish, while the deep taproot is rich in the prebiotic fibre inulin and can be harvested, roasted, and ground into a robust, caffeine-free coffee substitute.
Taraxacum species are recognised by entomologists as some of the most critical early-season forage plants available. Because T. pseudoroseum blooms early in the spring, the open, composite flowers provide an easily accessible and highly concentrated source of nectar and pollen for emerging solitary bees, hungry bumblebee queens, and hoverflies when very few other floral resources are available. Below ground, the plant develops a deep taproot, helping to break up compacted, heavy soils while drawing up moisture and essential minerals from deep within the subsoil.
This Central Asian perennial is exceptionally resilient and low-maintenance. It is fully hardy across the UK and will comfortably survive extreme winter freezing. It thrives in almost any soil type, from heavy clay to poor, rocky ground, and is highly drought-tolerant once established. While it reproduces via wind-dispersed seeds attached to a fluffy pappus like the common dandelion, its less vigorous, clump-forming habit makes it far easier to manage. To enjoy its unique blooms and culinary benefits while keeping the garden tidy, simply deadhead the flowers once their pink petals begin to fade.
