Perennial Wall Rocket (Perennial salad leaves)
£5.75
Perennial Wall Rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia)
Perennial Wall Rocket, often known as wild rocket, is a reliable, long-lived alternative to standard annual salad greens. It produces narrow, deeply lobed leaves that have a stronger, more pungent mustard bite than common supermarket rocket. Unlike annual rocket (Eruca vesicaria), which bolts and dies rapidly in the summer heat, this perennial species will continue to produce fresh, edible foliage throughout the growing season, especially if the flowering stems are periodically cut back.
Perennial | 30/60cm tall | Full sun | Intensely peppery leaves and edible yellow flowers | Drought-tolerant and highly attractive to pollinators

Perennial Wall Rocket, often known as wild rocket, is a reliable, long-lived alternative to standard annual salad greens. It produces a basal rosette of narrow, deeply lobed leaves that contain high levels of glucosinolates, giving them a significantly stronger, more pungent mustard bite than common supermarket rocket. Unlike annual rocket (Eruca vesicaria), which bolts and dies rapidly in the summer heat, this perennial species will continue to produce fresh, edible foliage throughout the growing season, especially if the flowering stems are periodically cut back.
Perennial wall rocket is well-adapted to dry, poor conditions. It utilises a deep, penetrating taproot capable of finding moisture in rocky ground, gravel beds, or the mortar cracks of stone walls, making it a highly resilient, low-maintenance crop for dry, sunny edges where thirstier plants would fail. From late spring through to autumn, it produces a constant succession of small, yellow flowers. Because it blooms over such a prolonged period, it provides a reliable, continuous nectar and pollen source for beneficial insects, particularly hoverflies and small solitary bees, which act as a natural aphid control.
Perennial Wall Rocket requires very little intervention once established. Holding an RHS H6 hardiness rating, it is fully hardy in the UK, typically dying back to its woody base during harsh winters before resprouting in early spring. It performs best in poor, highly free-draining soil and baking sun; planting it in rich or heavily watered soil will increase the water content of the leaves, diluting its intense flavour. Left to its own devices, it will self-seed readily into dry borders and gravel paths, establishing a permanent, low-effort supply of gourmet salad greens.

Love for the plants and passion for growing shines in abundance from the plants I have received. Delivered well packed and in great condition. Now I just need to read up on how to plant these properly in Huw’s book to do them justice and hopefully I’ll have little permaculture garden of my own for years to come. Great job Huw & everyone at Dyfi for inspiration and excellent YouTube chanel too
