Lemon Verbena (Lemon sherbet scented leaves)
£5.75
Lemon Verbena (Aloysia citrodora)
Lemon Verbena is a woody shrub; its rough, lance-shaped leaves contain exceptionally high concentrations of essential oils, which means when crushed, the leaves smell like lemon sherbet. The leaves are highly valued for making soothing digestive teas, infusing syrups and vinegars, or flavouring desserts. The foliage also retains its potent aromatic compounds exceptionally well when dried. The pungent leaves mean that rabbits and deer dont like to eat it, and the strong smell can help mask more vulnerable crops from pests. Lemon verbena has a hardiness rating of RHS H3, the plant is tender and will sustain damage in frosts below -5°C. It is entirely deciduous, dropping all its leaves in late autumn and remaining a bare woody skeleton through the winter. It requires highly free-draining soil and a sheltered, full-sun position, such as against a warm, south-facing brick wall. We grow ours in our polytunnel. For most UK growers, it is best cultivated in a large container mixed with horticultural grit, allowing the plant to be easily moved into a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory to protect the root system from cold, waterlogged winter soil.
Tender Perennial Shrub | 100/150cm tall | Full sun | Intensely lemon-scented edible leaves | Aromatic pest deterrent and excellent container specimen
