Globe Artichoke ‘Violet de Provence’ (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus)

‘Violet de Provence’ is a renowned French heritage variety of globe artichoke, distinguished by its elongated, richly purple-tinged flower buds. Botanically, the edible portion is the immature flower head (capitulum). This variety is highly prized for its tenderness; when harvested young, the buds can be eaten almost whole, while mature buds yield a large, fleshy heart and edible bract bases. The buds if not harvested for the kitchen open into massive, electric-blue, thistle-like flowers. that are a magnet for honeybees and bumblebees during late summer. ‘Violet de Provence’ is a dramatic, architectural statement plant. It produces large, silvery-green, deeply lobed leaves that provide excellent structural ground cover before the tall flowering stalks emerge.

Perennial | 120/150cm tall | Full sun | Tender, purple edible flower buds | Striking architectural form and premium pollinator forage

If the buds are not harvested for the kitchen, they open into massive, electric-blue, thistle-like inflorescences. As a member of the Asteraceae family, these giant composite flowers provide an extraordinarily rich and accessible nectar and pollen source, acting as a magnet for honeybees and bumblebees during late summer. Below ground, the globe artichoke develops a robust, deep-penetrating taproot that can effectively break up compacted soil horizons, naturally improving drainage and soil aeration without the need for manual tilling.

In a garden setting, ‘Violet de Provence’ acts as a dramatic, architectural statement plant. It produces large, silvery-green, deeply lobed leaves that provide excellent structural ground cover before the tall flowering stalks emerge. Holding an RHS H5 hardiness rating, the plant can comfortably survive cold UK temperatures, but it is highly susceptible to winter rotting. It strictly requires free-draining soil and a position in full sun; planting on a slight mound or incorporating grit into the planting hole is recommended to prevent the fleshy roots from sitting in cold, waterlogged clay during winter. With the correct drainage, this robust perennial will remain highly productive for four to five years before requiring division.

FAQs

We hope our FAQ’s help, but if you need any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

We can only send orders to other parts of mainland GB due to strict regulations for the sending of plant materials and sadly we do not have the capacity to fill in phytosanitary certificates.

As we are a small business we currently have one packing day a week, and so expect your delivery within 2 weeks from ordering your plants.

At this moment in time we are not open for visits to the nursery, however if you come on a volunteer day or in-person course with Huw or Sam at Dan Yr Onnen you can of course then see the nursery and purchase plants in person.

Because working with plants can be an unpredictable business, for simplicity we do not offer pre-orders on all products however we may occasuinally open certain orders for pre orders and these will be clearly marked. The best time to know that we have restocked is to join our mailing list followed by looking out for updates on our Instagram.

We have decided to focus on growing plants 100% naturally without the limitations of going with organic certification. No artificial pesticides, fungicides, or anyother-icides are used on site.
