Globe Artichoke ‘Romanesco’ (Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus ‘Romanesco’)
Romanesco Globe Artichoke is a spectacular, architectural perennial that forms a fountain of jagged, silvery-green foliage. While standard globe artichokes produce solid green, slightly pointed buds, this highly prized heritage variety is renowned for its large, spherical, violet-purple and green heads. Harvested in early to mid-summer before the flowers open, the thick, fleshy bases of the petals (bracts) and the succulent ‘heart’ inside offer a rich, nutty, and buttery flavour.

It is a structural giant, and as with all of the cardoons and artichokes its a fantastic nutrient cycler. Its deep taproot acts as a “dynamic accumulator,” mining essential minerals from the subsoil and bringing them to the surface. The large and abundant leaves make it a great biomass producer and a useful plant to chop and drop. If unharvested, the flowers are excellent nectar sources for pollinators and act as small bird feeders in the winter months. Its dramatic stature and silvery foliage make it a beautiful addition to your garden. This edible perennial is remarkably drought-resilient once established, thriving in baking sun and free-draining soils.
