Originating from warm climates, like most chillies, it holds an RHS H1C hardiness rating and will suffer severe tissue damage at temperatures beow 5°C. It’s commonly grown as a warm-season annual in the UK, performing best in the sheltered, high-heat environment of a greenhouse or polytunnel. Lemon Drop is a notably vigorous, sprawling species; it branches heavily and requires sturdy staking or a supportive framework to prevent the heavily laden stems from snapping under the weight of the prolific fruit clusters. Consistent, deep watering and a high-potassium liquid feed once the first flowers appear will ensure a continuous harvest right up until the late autumn frosts.
