Cardoon ‘Rouge d’Alger’

Cardoon ‘Rouge d’Alger’ (Cynara cardunculus)

Cardoon ‘Rouge d’Alger’ is a spectacular relative of the globe artichoke. It’s a robust perennial vegetable that forms a massive, fountain-like rosette of deeply toothed, silvery-grey foliage. It has a deep taproot that can help bring nutrients from deep in the soil up to the surface to help aid the growth of shallow-rooted plants. The large quantity of foliage produced makes it an excellent biomass producer, perfect for chop and drop. While standard cardoons have pale green stems, this stunning heritage Algerian variety is characterised by its vibrant, crimson-red stalks. Grown primarily for these thick, fleshy leaf midribs, the stalks are wrapped and blanched in late autumn to keep them tender and mild. Once cooked, they offer a rich, nutty flavour.

If left to flower, it shoots up towering stems topped with enormous, electric-purple thistle blooms. These are absolute magnets for bumblebees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, providing a vital late-summer nectar feast, while the dried seed heads feed overwintering birds. Even if you never harvested this plant for the kitchen, it would make a beautiful, dramatic addition to your garden.  It is remarkably drought-resilient once established, thriving in baking sun and free-draining soils. Although it requires a generous footprint, this hardy edible perennial will reward you with architectural beauty, immense ecological services, and unique winter harvests year after year.

FAQs

We hope our FAQ’s help, but if you need any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

We can only send orders to other parts of mainland GB due to strict regulations for the sending of plant materials and sadly we do not have the capacity to fill in phytosanitary certificates.

As we are a small business we currently have one packing day a week, and so expect your delivery within 2 weeks from ordering your plants.

At this moment in time we are not open for visits to the nursery, however if you come on a volunteer day or in-person course with Huw or Sam at Dan Yr Onnen you can of course then see the nursery and purchase plants in person.

Because working with plants can be an unpredictable business, for simplicity we do not offer pre-orders on all products however we may occasuinally open certain orders for pre orders and these will be clearly marked. The best time to know that we have restocked is to join our mailing list followed by looking out for updates on our Instagram.

We have decided to focus on growing plants 100% naturally without the limitations of going with organic certification. No artificial pesticides, fungicides, or anyother-icides are used on site.
