Cardoon ‘Bianco Avorio’ | Mediterranean Vegetable

£5.95

Cardoon ‘Bianco Avorio’ (Cynara cardunculus)

Cardoon ‘Bianco Avorio’ (translating to ‘Ivory White’) is a statuesque Mediterranean giant that brings both striking architecture and gourmet potential to the kitchen garden. Unlike older, fiercely spiky varieties, this variety is virtually spineless, making it easy to cultivate and handle. It produces deeply lobed, silver-green leaves and broad, pale ivory stems. When wrapped and blanched in late autumn, these thick midribs become incredibly tender. Once cooked, they reveal a nutty and subtly sweet artichoke flavour.

Perennial | 150-200cm tall | Full sun | Edible blanched stalks | Superb biomass generator and pollinator magnet

Cardoon ‘Bianco Avorio’ (translating to ‘Ivory White’) is a statuesque Mediterranean giant that brings both striking architecture and gourmet potential to the kitchen garden. Like with other cardoons, the ‘Bianco avorio’ has a deep tap root that helps it be incredibly resilient and tolerant of dry, poor conditions. The tap root also helps to bring nutrients from the subsoil up to the surface, making them more accessible to the surrounding plants.  The sheer size and volume of its foliage provide an abundance of organic matter, making it an ideal candidate for “chop and drop” mulching to naturally suppress weeds and lock in moisture. If permitted to flower, the plant sends up stalks crowned with oversized, electric-purple thistle flowers. These blooms are a crucial late-season nectar source, while the seed heads provide winter forage for birds.

Although this edible perennial is large, it will be a beautiful, resilient edible to add to your garden, providing a delicious harvest and positive ecological benefit.

FAQs

We hope our FAQ’s help, but if you need any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

We can only send orders to other parts of mainland GB due to strict regulations for the sending of plant materials and sadly we do not have the capacity to fill in phytosanitary certificates.

As we are a small business we currently have one packing day a week, and so expect your delivery within 2 weeks from ordering your plants.

At this moment in time we are not open for visits to the nursery, however if you come on a volunteer day or in-person course with Huw or Sam at Dan Yr Onnen you can of course then see the nursery and purchase plants in person.

Because working with plants can be an unpredictable business, for simplicity we do not offer pre-orders on all products however we may occasuinally open certain orders for pre orders and these will be clearly marked. The best time to know that we have restocked is to join our mailing list followed by looking out for updates on our Instagram.

We have decided to focus on growing plants 100% naturally without the limitations of going with organic certification. No artificial pesticides, fungicides, or anyother-icides are used on site.
