CAPE GOOSEBERRY (PHYSALIS PERUVIANA)
With its glowing orange fruits encased in papery husks, the Cape Gooseberry is a tropical-looking plant with a surprisingly easy-going nature. Though technically perennial, it’s most often grown as an annual in the UK, thriving in pots, greenhouses, or warm, sheltered spots.
The flavour is like pineapple crossed with tomato and citrus a true taste of summer. Each fruit is packed with vitamin C and perfect eaten fresh, in jams, or dipped in chocolate. Its sprawling habit can be trained upwards, and with a bit of protection, plants can sometimes be overwintered and regrow the following season.
Annual in UK (can be overwintered if kept frost-free) | 90cm (3ft) | Full sun | Edible fruits & decorative husks
