Anise Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum)

The soft, heart-shaped leaves of Anise Hyssop release a strong scent of sweet aniseed and liquorice with a subtle hint of mint. The leaves can used to make a naturally sweet tea, while the vibrant purple flowers provide a liquorice-flavoured addition to salads and desserts. The long-lasting flower spikes are a proven attractant for native UK bumblebees and butterflies and the tall, upright stalks if left standing through the winter provide essential, nesting tubes for native cavity-nesting solitary bees.It has an RHS H3 hardiness rating; while it tolerates cold, heavy winter wet can cause root rot. So it is best treated as a short-lived perennial in the UK. Planted in well-drained soil and full sun, it will self-seed reliably, ensuring a continuous, low-maintenance presence in the garden year after year.

Short-lived Perennial | 60/90cm tall | Full sun | Sweet edible leaves and flowers | High-yield nectar source and natural pest deterrent

Though a member of the mint family, Anise Hyssop offers a distinct flavour profile. The soft, heart-shaped leaves release a strong scent of sweet aniseed and liquorice with a subtle hint of mint. In the kitchen, the leaves are used to make a naturally sweet tea, while the vibrant purple flowers provide a liquorice-flavoured addition to salads and desserts. Unlike many herbs that turn woody or bitter after flowering, it remains tender, producing aromatic foliage consistently until the first frosts.

Anise Hyssop’s long-lasting flower spikes are a proven attractant for native UK bumblebees and butterflies. If the tall, upright stalks are left standing through the winter, the soft, pithy centres provide essential, ready-made nesting tubes for native cavity-nesting solitary bees. When planted alongside vegetable beds or fruit trees, the strong essential oils can act as an olfactory mask, confusing insect pests and deterring them from vulnerable crops. The pungent foliage is also naturally unpalatable to deer and rabbits. The dense spikes of purple flowers provide excellent late-season colour and structural interest. It has an RHS H3 hardiness rating; while it tolerates cold, heavy winter wet can cause root rot. So it is best treated as a short-lived perennial in the UK. Planted in well-drained soil and full sun, it will self-seed reliably, ensuring a continuous, low-maintenance presence in the garden year after year.

FAQs

We hope our FAQ’s help, but if you need any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

We can only send orders to other parts of mainland GB due to strict regulations for the sending of plant materials and sadly we do not have the capacity to fill in phytosanitary certificates.

As we are a small business we currently have one packing day a week, and so expect your delivery within 2 weeks from ordering your plants.

At this moment in time we are not open for visits to the nursery, however if you come on a volunteer day or in-person course with Huw or Sam at Dan Yr Onnen you can of course then see the nursery and purchase plants in person.

Because working with plants can be an unpredictable business, for simplicity we do not offer pre-orders on all products however we may occasuinally open certain orders for pre orders and these will be clearly marked. The best time to know that we have restocked is to join our mailing list followed by looking out for updates on our Instagram.

We have decided to focus on growing plants 100% naturally without the limitations of going with organic certification. No artificial pesticides, fungicides, or anyother-icides are used on site.
