Perennial | Hight 60-90cm | Full sun to partial shade | Natural soap-making

Soapwort is a charming and versatile herb, cherished for its soft clusters of pale pink blooms and its historic use as a natural soap. Found growing wild along hedgerows and riverbanks, its equally at home in cottage gardens, herb beds, or polycultures where it gently spreads to form a low, flowering thicket that bees adore.

The plant contains natural saponins, particularly in its roots and leaves, which can be simmered in water to create a gentle, chemical-free lather ideal for washing delicate fabrics or even as a mild shampoo. The sweet-scented flowers attract a steady stream of pollinators through summer and into early autumn.

As a permaculture ally, soapwort is low-maintenance, drought-tolerant once established, and thrives in a variety of soils. It helps fill out planting schemes with beauty and purpose, and can even be used as a ground cover in sunny or semi-shaded areas. A plant with old-world charm and modern relevance, perfect for the regenerative grower and the naturally curious gardener.

FAQs

We hope our FAQ’s help, but if you need any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

We can only send orders to other parts of mainland GB due to strict regulations for the sending of plant materials and sadly we do not have the capacity to fill in phytosanitary certificates.

As we are a small business we currently have one packing day a week, and so expect your delivery within 2 weeks from ordering your plants.

At this moment in time we are not open for visits to the nursery, however if you come on a volunteer day or in-person course with Huw or Sam at Dan Yr Onnen you can of course then see the nursery and purchase plants in person.

Because working with plants can be an unpredictable business, for simplicity we do not offer pre-orders on all products however we may occasuinally open certain orders for pre orders and these will be clearly marked. The best time to know that we have restocked is to join our mailing list followed by looking out for updates on our Instagram.

We have decided to focus on growing plants 100% naturally without the limitations of going with organic certification. No artificial pesticides, fungicides, or anyother-icides are used on site.
