Evening Primrose ‘Sunset Boulevard’ (Edible Flowers)

Evening Primrose ‘Sunset Boulevard’ (Oenothera versicolor ‘Sunset Boulevard’)

We grow ‘Sunset Boulevard’ for its unique floral performance and benefits to our wildlife. The flowers open as a brilliant tangerine-orange in the late afternoon, and as they age into the following day, they physically shift colour to a deep, dramatic crimson-red, providing us a good harvest of edible blooms. Once flowering begins, the plant is a prolific bloomer, producing a continuous, daily yield of fresh edible flowers from mid-summer right through to early autumn.

Perennial (often grown as Biennial) | 40/60cm tall | Full sun | Edible sunset-coloured flowers | Good forage for insects and drought-tolerant groundcover

Holding an RHS H4 hardiness rating, this plant is fully hardy through standard UK winters down to -10°C, provided its roots do not sit in winter waterlogging. It is remarkably low-maintenance.  ‘Sunset Boulevard’ is usually a short-lived perennial or biennial, but it readily and reliably self-seeds to maintain a permanent colony. Maintenance simply involves cutting back the dark, woody stems in late winter to tidy the patch. Oenothera versicolor is highly adapted to dry, difficult environments. It likes a position in full sun and free-draining soil. It thrives beautifully in poor, stony, sandy, or chalky soils where heavily bred ornamentals and thirsty vegetable crops would quickly fail.

To create a stunning, drought-resistant that supports pollinators, pair ‘Sunset Boulevard’ with other striking, sun-loving species. Excellent companions include Bronze Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare ‘Purpureum’), and the structural silver foliage of Cardoons (Cynara cardunculus) and Globe Artichokes (Cynara cardunculus).

FAQs

We hope our FAQ’s help, but if you need any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

We can only send orders to other parts of mainland GB due to strict regulations for the sending of plant materials and sadly we do not have the capacity to fill in phytosanitary certificates.

As we are a small business we currently have one packing day a week, and so expect your delivery within 2 weeks from ordering your plants.

At this moment in time we are not open for visits to the nursery, however if you come on a volunteer day or in-person course with Huw or Sam at Dan Yr Onnen you can of course then see the nursery and purchase plants in person.

Because working with plants can be an unpredictable business, for simplicity we do not offer pre-orders on all products however we may occasuinally open certain orders for pre orders and these will be clearly marked. The best time to know that we have restocked is to join our mailing list followed by looking out for updates on our Instagram.

We have decided to focus on growing plants 100% naturally without the limitations of going with organic certification. No artificial pesticides, fungicides, or anyother-icides are used on site.
