The Pineberry is a unique cultivar of the garden strawberry. Unlike standard strawberries, the ripe fruit develops a pale white to soft pink flesh speckled with prominent red seeds. It has a unique flavour profile, which is reminiscent of a pineapple. The fruit is best eaten fresh to appreciate its complex, tropical flavour, offering a gourmet addition to summer desserts.

Pineberries rely heavily on insect pollination to achieve successful fruit set and prevent malformed berries. It is important to note that many pineberry cultivars exhibit partial male-sterility or are not reliably self-fertile. To maximise fruit yield and size, it is scientifically recommended to interplant them with a standard red, spring-fruiting strawberry variety to ensure adequate cross-pollination. The simple, white flowers bloom in late spring and act as a highly accessible nectar and pollen resource. Once established, they spread via creeping stolons (runners), creating a dense, living mulch that suppresses weed competition and provides shelter for beneficial predatory ground beetles.

The Pineberry is cultivated exactly like a traditional strawberry. Holding an RHS H6 hardiness rating, it is fully hardy across the UK and will comfortably survive severe winter frosts. It performs best in fertile, highly free-draining, slightly acidic soil positioned in full sun; excessive shading will significantly reduce both floral initiation and the accumulation of fruit sugars. An added horticultural benefit of the white flesh is that it is visually ignored by many foraging birds, reducing the immediate need for protective netting. For optimal health and continued high yields, it is advisable to replace the parent plants every three to four years using the freshly rooted runners.
