Welsh Onion is a robust, non-bulbing perennial that provides a reliable alternative to sowing annual spring onions. Despite the common name, it originates in Asia, not Wales. This specific variety is characterised by the red colouration at the base of its hollow, cylindrical stems. Welsh onions offer a crisp texture and a mild, sweet onion flavour. It is highly versatile, perfect for snipping fresh into salads, garnishing stir-fries, or using as a continuous cut-and-come-again crop. Because it does not expend energy forming a large underground bulb, it focuses entirely on producing a dense, ever-expanding clump of edible green foliage.

In mid-summer, the plant sends up tall stalks topped with spherical, greenish-white flower heads. These densely packed umbels are highly attractive to a wide array of foraging insects, particularly honeybees and beneficial hoverflies. Planting these aromatic clumps around the borders of vegetable beds can help provide a natural masking deterrent against pests like the carrot root fly and aphids.

Welsh onions are an exceptionally low-maintenance and resilient crop. It holds an RHS H6 hardiness rating, meaning it will comfortably survive severe UK winters. It thrives in well-drained soil and will tolerate both full sun and partial shade. Rather than dying back completely, it often remains evergreen in milder winters, providing fresh harvests when other crops are dormant. Over time, the root system multiplies to form a dense, productive cluster; lifting and dividing this clump every few years will maintain the plant’s vigour and effortlessly provide you with new stock to expand your edible borders.
