Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium)

Pennyroyal is a non-edible creeping mint. It’s a low-growing perennial herb that spreads readily to form a dense, fragrant mat. While it shares the vigorous, resilient nature of its mint relatives, this specific herb has been cultivated in gardens for centuries. It produces stems of small, bright green foliage that shoot up whorls of charming, lilac-purple flowers in mid to late summer. Crushing the leaves releases a strong, crisp scent, this made it a garden staple for naturally deterring pests.

Perennial | 10/30cm tall | Full sun to partial shade | Highly aromatic foliage and flowers | Excellent ground cover and loved by pollinators.

Pennyroyal is a non-edible creeping mint. It’s a low-growing perennial herb that spreads readily to form a dense, fragrant mat. It produces stems of small, bright green foliage that shoot up whorls of charming, lilac-purple flowers in mid to late summer.

Due to its creeping resilient nature, it makes an excellent living mulch, blanketing the soil to retain moisture, prevent erosion, and naturally suppress unwanted weeds. It is highly effective when planted in fruit tree guilds or as an understory layer in an agroforestry project, where its pungent scent can act as camouflage, confusing pests and protecting more vulnerable crops nearby. Pennyroyal will grow in damp soil and helps stabilise the edges of water features such as ponds and swales. It flowers in late summer and produces abundant nectar-rich flowers that are perfect for beneficial pollinators. Unlike culinary mints, which were bred for sweet, delicate flavours, Pennyroyal boasts a pungent aroma. Crushing the leaves releases a strong, crisp scent.  Historically, this made it a garden staple for naturally deterring pests.

Although a vigorous spreader, if it spreads to unwanted areas, its shallow-rooted runners are easily removed and propagated. Pennyroyal is a wonderful perennial ground cover for your garden.

FAQs

We hope our FAQ’s help, but if you need any further information please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

We can only send orders to other parts of mainland GB due to strict regulations for the sending of plant materials and sadly we do not have the capacity to fill in phytosanitary certificates.

As we are a small business we currently have one packing day a week, and so expect your delivery within 2 weeks from ordering your plants.

At this moment in time we are not open for visits to the nursery, however if you come on a volunteer day or in-person course with Huw or Sam at Dan Yr Onnen you can of course then see the nursery and purchase plants in person.

Because working with plants can be an unpredictable business, for simplicity we do not offer pre-orders on all products however we may occasuinally open certain orders for pre orders and these will be clearly marked. The best time to know that we have restocked is to join our mailing list followed by looking out for updates on our Instagram.

We have decided to focus on growing plants 100% naturally without the limitations of going with organic certification. No artificial pesticides, fungicides, or anyother-icides are used on site.
